12/3/2023 0 Comments Play lego digital designer game![]() Godtfred saw the immense potential in Lego bricks to become a system for creative play, but the bricks still had some problems from a technical standpoint: their locking ability was limited, and they were not versatile. It was his conversation with an overseas buyer that led to the idea of a toy system. īy 1954, Christiansen's son, Godtfred, had become the junior managing director of the Lego Group. Although a common sentiment, Lego toys seem to have become a significant exception to the dislike of plastic in children's toys, due in part to the high standards set by Ole Kirk. By 1951, plastic toys accounted for half of the Lego company's output, even though the Danish trade magazine Legetøjs-Tidende ("Toy Times"), visiting the Lego factory in Billund in the early 1950s, felt that plastic would never be able to replace traditional wooden toys. This motto, which is still used today, was created by Christiansen to encourage his employees never to skimp on quality, a value he believed in strongly. The Lego Group's motto, "only the best is good enough" ( Danish: det bedste er ikke for godt, literally "the best isn't excessively good") was created in 1936. The bricks, originally manufactured from cellulose acetate, were a development of the traditional stackable wooden blocks of the time. Lego had received a sample of the Kiddicraft bricks from the supplier of an injection-molding machine that it purchased. These bricks were based on the Kiddicraft Self-Locking Bricks, which had been patented in the United Kingdom in 1939 and released in 1947. In 1949 Lego began producing, among other new products, an early version of the now familiar interlocking bricks, calling them "Automatic Binding Bricks". In 1947, Lego expanded to begin producing plastic toys. In 1934, his company came to be called "Lego", derived from the Danish phrase leg godt, which means "play well". The Lego Group began in the workshop of Ole Kirk Christiansen (1891–1958), a carpenter from Billund, Denmark, who began making wooden toys in 1932. Main articles: History of Lego and Lego timeline Hilary Fisher Page's Interlocking Building Cubes by Kiddicraft, 1939 Lego bricks Two Lego Duplo bricks with a standard brick for comparison As of July 2015, 600 billion Lego parts had been produced. Films, games competitions, and eight Legoland amusement parks have been developed under the brand. The Lego Group began manufacturing the interlocking toy bricks in 1949. Anything constructed can be taken apart again, and the pieces reused to make new things. Lego pieces can be assembled and connected in many ways to construct objects, including vehicles, buildings, and working robots. Lego consists of variously colored interlocking plastic bricks made of acrylonitrile butadiene styrene that accompany an array of gears, figurines called minifigures, and various other parts. Lego ( / ˈ l ɛ ɡ oʊ/ LEG-oh, Danish: stylized as LEGO) is a line of plastic construction toys that are manufactured by the Lego Group, a privately held company based in Billund, Denmark.

The Chinese authorities have typically employed a highly elastic definition of what constitutes a state secret, and national security charges are frequently leveled at journalists, rights lawyers and activists, often based on material they posted online. There’s also concern that normal business activities like gathering intelligence on local markets, competitors and partners could be treated as "espionage" amid growing tensions between Beijing, the United States and its allies. So I think you and your teacher are both wrong! Butterflies don't have ~380 chromosomes, and they don't all have 20-40 chromosomes either! ![]() I think there is a big variation in how many chromosomes a butterfly can have, like it says in the Nature article. So, I think the number 380 is a mistake, because I can't find that number in any scientific articles. That article is from 2005, which was not so long ago. ![]() It says that there's one group of butterflies where the numbers of chromosomes in different species vary from 20 to 268. I found the best article yet in Nature magazine, which is a very famous science magazine. Somebody wrote a book called "DNA and Heredity" that says butterflies have 380 chromosomes.Ĥ. Here's a link that says butterflies have about 380 chromosomes and a huge genome, 40 times bigger than ours: geneticsģ. I found an article that says butterflies have 30 or 31 chromosomes but it's an old article from 1978, and scientists have learned a lot of new things since then.Ģ. So I very much doubt that butterflies would have hundreds of chromosomes, but I do not know for sure.ġ. This is almost always fatal in animals (you may know about Down Syndrome in humans, which happens from an extra copy of Chromosome 21 - and that's just ONE extra chromosome, not an entire set), which means that for the most part you only see it in plants and fungi. Organisms that have 100+ chromosomes usually acquire them through a process called 'polyploidy', which is a duplication of the numbers of chromosomes. From what I know of genetics, I will bet that it is 20-40, and that it varies from one species of butterfly to the next, just as it varies from one species of mammal to the next. Well, I looked online and found both answers. Others like the Squinting Bush Brown butterfly (Bicyclus anynana) has 28 chromosomes and the Red Postman butterfly (Heliconius erato) has 21 chromosomes. Thanks! On the other hand, the Hypothyris thea butterfly of the Nymphalidae family has only 10 chromosomes. You both win! Different butterflies actually have different numbers of chromosomes! The Polyommatus atlantica butterfly of the Lycaenidae family has 446 chromosomes. Only time will tell! You might want to keep track of the butterfly research and I am sure one day you will know exactly how many genes and chromosomes your favorite butterfly has. Although, flies and butterflies are quite different so it is possible they share very little DNA. So, you might ask, what does this have to do with a butterfly? Since fruit flies and butterflies are both insects they MAY share similar amounts of DNA in their genomes. They have over 13,000 genes on 4 chromosomes. They have been studied for years and every single piece of DNA has been counted. The important thing about fruit flies is that scientists know a lot about these insects genome. ![]() They are small brown flies with red eyes that you may have seen flying around fruit in the kitchen. Another insect also found in this phylum is the fruit fly. The genome is made up of every single piece of DNA a butterfly has. Therefore, once we know the sequence of all the DNA we will know how much there is and since chromosomes are made of DNA we will eventually know how many chromosomes the butterflies have.īutterflies are insects in the Phylum Arthropoda. I did not know the answer to this question so I did some research and it turns out that no one knows the answer yet! There are several groups of scientists that study butterflies and moths and they are trying to sequence the genomes but have not finished. How many chromosomes do butterflies have? My teacher and I have a debate on if they have 380 chromosomes or 20-40. 12/2/2023 0 Comments Dr. tom aaron webberJ., Physicochemical behaviour of cationic polyelectrolyte brushes. J., Influence of molecular weight on PNIPAM brush modified colloidal silica particles. This work has been supported by Australian Research Council Discovery Project DP110100041 and more than 25 succesful proposals for access to beamlines at the OPAL research reactor at the Australian Neutron Science and Technology Organisation. Recent research has developed multi-responsive systems, producing copolymer brushes that respond to both temperature and pH changes opening a rich new avenue for control material properties. Our research was the first to directly confirm the two-phase collapse of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) brushes using neutron reflectometry. In this way we are able to better engineer a surface or interface to meet a specific end-use application, such as a temperature dependent rheology modifier. This process is water-based, has low energy requirements, and offers enhanced control of the three-dimensional structure of the coating. We produce stimulus-responsive polymer coatings using surface initiated polymerisation via a process known as activators-continuously regenerated atom transfer radical polymerisation (ARGET ATRP). The nanoscale switches in morphology impact macroscale behaviour, such as contact angle and wettability. These coatings change their structure at a molecular level in response to external stimuli such as solution pH, temperature or salt concentration. Polymers and Polymer Brush Coatings - I have an extensive track record in the production and characterisation of stimulus-responsive polymer thin-film coatings. In collaboration with other researchers we utilise modelling, simulation and quantum-chemical computational methods to further characterise and describe these phenomena. I use highly sensitive techniques such as neutron reflection and scattering, atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry, quartz crystal microbalance and light scattering combined with larger scale methods such as contact angle, interfacial tension, rheology and particle settling stability measurements to link nanoscale and bulk behaviours. By combining the disciplines of chemical engineering and physical chemistry my research aims to solve real-world problems through the application of fundamental science. My research deploys engineered surfaces and interfaces to control material properties. My research combines cutting-edge experiments and precision modelling and simulation methods to study colloidal and interfacial phenomena with relevance to personal care products, pharmaceuticals, the minerals industry, water treatment, micro- and nanomechanical devices, food production and biomedical device manufacture. ![]() ![]() I am a mid-career research chemical engineer, working across discipline boundaries to uncover the links between nanoscale behaviours and macroscale properties. 12/2/2023 0 Comments Big shark'There is also a megalodon fossil found in Peru that apparently has the braincase and all the teeth, with a small string of vertebrae,' says Emma, 'although I have yet to see high-quality images of this specimen.' So while the more robust teeth become fossilised relatively easily, only in very special circumstances will soft tissue be preserved.įossilised megalodon vertebrae about the size of a dinner plate have also been found. While our bones are coated in the mineral calcium phosphate, shark skeletons are made entirely from softer cartilage like our nose and ears. Teeth are also the hardest part of a shark's skeleton. This means that shark teeth are continuously raining down onto the ocean floor, increasing the chance that they will get fossilised. Depending on what they eat, sharks lose a set of teeth every one to two weeks, getting through up to 40,000 teeth in their lifetime. Sharks continually produce teeth throughout their entire lives. Are megalodon teeth rare?Īlmost all fossil remains of megalodon are teeth. They can even be found in the UK near Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex,' says Emma, although they are extremely rare in the UK and tend to be of poor quality. 'They are also quite common off the coast of Morocco and parts of Australia. This is likely due in part to the age of the rocks, but also because they can easily be found on the sea floor allowing collectors to go diving for them. 'We can find lots of their teeth off the east coast of North America, along the coasts and at the bottom of saltwater creeks and rivers of North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida,' explains Emma. The species was so widely spread that megalodon teeth have been found on every continent except Antarctica. megalodon was adapted to warm tropical and subtropical locations around the globe. Some scientists think they might even have been in competition with each other,' says Emma. 'As we've found more and more fossils, we've realised that the ancestor to the great white shark lived alongside megalodon. But the evolutionary history of this shark is thought to stretch back to Cretalamna appendiculata, dating to 105 million years old - making the lineage of megalodon over 100 million years old. The oldest definitive ancestor of megalodon is a 55-million-year-old shark known as Otodus obliquus, which grew to around 10 metres in length. 'We now know that this is not the case, and megalodon is actually from a different lineage of shark of which megalodon was the last member.' 'A lot of reconstructions have megalodon looking like a bigger version of the great white shark because for a long time people thought they were related,' explains Emma. Like the blue shark, it also had extra-long pectoral fins to support its weight and size. megalodon likely had a much shorter nose, or rostrum, when compared with the great white, with a flatter, almost squashed jaw. Most reconstructions show megalodon looking like an enormous great white shark, Carcharodon carcharias.
